A dominant first-half performance from Beckenham Angels saw them defeat the Girls NTC 19’s 4-0 to help regain their position on top of the Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division.
Report by Colin Outhwaite
Andrea Preiato scored a brace and singles from from Katarina Jukic and Lindsey Jobling made the Angels echo their previous week’s score line.
Beckenham coach Jason Washington-King thought they should have finished the game even stronger.
“They’re [NTC] a good team, we had to be really clinical in front of goal and make sure we finished our chances,” he said.
“I thought we played better in the first half but we created a lot of opportunities in the last 15 minutes of the second that we didn’t finish.”
Both teams started fiery in the top of the table clash but it only took four minutes for Beckenham to make their statement. Katarina Jukic took a touch around a defender to smash the ball past keeper Gabby Dal Busco after a well worked build-up down the left wing and a lay-off from Danielle Calautti.
Three minutes later Emma Leaning curled a cracking strike onto the post from 25 yards.
NTC then gave it a go from range, Maddison Schofield almost equalising in the 11th minute with a free kick that keeper Kristy Teschinsky did well to tip onto the bar.
Jukic would have got her second for the Angels in the 20th minute had her shot from a corner not been denied by the crossbar, but Preiato was there to pick up the rebound and make it 2-0.
NTC, who only have one player over the age of 18, displayed further signs of vulnerability from corners and conceded twice more.
Jobling headed one in in the 26th minute then Preiato scored her second six minutes later, gifted with a second chance to shoot after her first attempt was blocked.
NTC conjured some composure after the break, tightening the defence and working the ball around comfortably at times.
But ultimately they were forced to work hard in the second half, with Dal Busco being regularly called to action and pulling off some impressive saves, keeping Calautti and Shannon May off the scorecard.
Despite the loss, NTC coach Jessine Bonzas wasn’t totally disappointed with the defeat.
“We gave a way better performance in the second half, we had much more structure,” she said.
“But for us it’s just about learning; we’re a development team, we’re looking for the players to implement the tactics we play.”
