Assertive Angels overpower Balcatta

Monday, July 28, 2014

Beckenham Angels were too strong for Balcatta in a Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division match on Sunday, beating the hosts 2-0 in a solid team performance bolstered by a versatile starting 11.

The victory at Grindleford Reserve was no mean feat, according to Beckenham coach Jason Washington-King.

“Balcatta are a very good team who are well coached, so to come here and win with a clean sheet is a really good result for us and a huge improvement on our performances in the last few weeks,” he said.

Beckenham put pressure on from the start with Katarina Jukic and Emma Leaning dictating the midfield. After creating a few chances in the first five minutes, the combination of Jamie-Lee Gale and Danielle Calautti on the right wing fed Andrea Preiato who lobbed over Balcatta keeper Kirsti Grover to give Beckenham an early lead.

Leaning continued to create problems for the Balcatta defence, while Jukic was left to run amok in the centre with plenty of time and space. Luckily for the hosts, she was plagued by inaccuracy.

Carol Howes was outstanding for Balcatta, showing strength and confidence as she single-handedly drove her team forward and created numerous chances.

The Balcatta defence seemed lacklustre and overwhelmed by persistent Angels’ pressure.

Beckenham battled for every ball and won the majority. This pressure allowed Gale to fire a shot from the right wing which was blocked by Grover but deflected to the feet of Lindsey Jobling, who tapped it home.

Beckenham continued to create chances, while Balcatta failed to respond with very limited attacking forays.

Beckenham’s pressure continued into the second half with a level of intensity that went unmatched by their opponents.

Annique Keisler, Jukic and Gale proved more than a handful for Balcatta’s Katie Moth and Amber Hoffman who, along with Grover, did well to prevent further Angels’ goals.

While Balcatta started to look more convincing, their first genuine chance did not come until the 68th minute when a shot from Gabrielle Walker tested the concentration of Teschinksy. This sparked a flurry of goalmouth action for the hosts but Caitlyn Broomehead and Kathryn Conroy did well to keep at bay the likes of Howes and Walker.

“While I thought Balcatta played pretty well today, we created more than enough chances to win, even though there were probably plenty of chances we didn’t take,” Washington-King said.

“It was a whole-team performance from us. We used the bench a lot which gave us some fresh legs as well as the chance to refocus and get going when we needed a boost and I think that’s what gave us the edge today.”
