The win also means that Backpackers could have the club’s first League and Cup double providing they avoid a 16-0 defeat to Melville City next weekend.

Player-Coach Angela Grehan could not contain her joy at the final whistle.

“Being honest, words can’t describe how I’m feeling right now,” Grehan said.

“I’m just really happy for the girls and so proud of the club because the girls were absolutely brilliant.”

Backpackers started the game on the front foot and forced Beckenham custodian Amberley Igloi into a great double save to first deny Roe and Porter on the follow up.

But Igloi could not prevent a well hit volley from nestling into the net after Roe received an incisive one-two from Porter to give Backpackers the early lead.

Beckenham pushed forward with Korien Stanbridge looking dangerous and forced a fine diving save from Backpackers keeper Navina Goericke when Emma Hughes’ well-stuck free kick beat the wall and appeared to be heading into the bottom corner.

But Backpackers doubled the lead with Roe being in the thick of the action once again.

The midfielder made a darting dribble from the left beating two defenders in the process before curling a deft effort onto the far post that was bundled across the line by Sidney.

Porter made it 3-0 just before halftime after a great solo effort from Roe that started from half way and ended with Porter tapping in with the easiest of finishes.

Down three at the half Beckenham started the brighter in the second half and were camped in the Backpackers half but found a resolute defence lead by Emma Tait hard to beat.

Backpackers made it 4-0 when Cansell got on the end of a corner to volley home as Beckenham failed to clear their line before Roe finished off the scoring with a delicate finish to give Backpackers a resounding 5-0 win.

Despite the loss a gracious Dereck Pollock was proud of his sides endeavor.

“The girls played really really well today and they performed admirably but it just wasn’t our day and we didn’t quite adapt to the situation well enough,” Pollock said.

“It’s been a difficult season for our team and we’ve had a real change over of players in the division one side and in our first game this season only one player was in the side from last year so it’s been an awesome season just to get here.”

A delighted Tait reflected on a whirlwind season for Backpackers.

“It’s been exceptional,” she said. “We’ve come in from division six then to division four and now we’re in division two and the range of girls that we have (from) people who are experienced to people who have never played and in between and to come together as a team and make it work every single week is just phenomenal in itself let alone to come into a match like this and win.”

“I think we really stuck together as a team today and it really was a team win.”
