Beckenham fight back for emphatic win

A 10-player Beckenham Angels came from behind to beat Queens Park 6-5 in the Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division at Mills Park on Sunday.

Danielle Calautti scored the Angels’ first and Lindsey Jobling bagged two along with goals from Andrea Preiato, Kirby Larsen and an own goal from centre-back Janelle Cuthbertson.

Beckenham and Perth Glory Women star Shannon May was given a red card in the 30th minute and the consequent penalty was converted by Nikki Campbell.

Brooke Johnston (two), Stacey Learmont and Monique Gordon provided the other goals for Queens Park but it wasn’t enough against a determined Beckenham side.

Queens Park interim coach Grant Learmont said that while he thought they deserved a draw they should have made better use of the extra player.

“I think the girls gave it their all, but at some stages it looked like [Beckenham] had the extra man,” Learmont said.

Queens started strong and opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Johnston shouldered off two defenders to connect with a through-ball from Emma Evans, putting it past goalkeeper Kristy Teschinsky.

Beckenham were resilient enough to hold back numerous attempts from Queens Park’s front three, but the constant pressure showed when May blocked a shot on the goal line with her hands and Campbell confidently fired home from the spot.

A minute later Beckenham responded and Jobling delivered a dangerous ball into the box for Calautti to knock into the far right hand corner past fill-in goalkeeper Danielle Cornish.

But with a player down they looked like they were on the verge of a thrashing when Learmont took advantage of a defensive error to net one in the 37th minute and three minutes later Johnston scored her second from inside the box to put them three in front.

Beckenham scored one on the cusp of half time to put the scores at 4-2 when Jobling nodded in a rebound with a diving header after Calautti’s powerful shot from range bounced off the crossbar.

Their vulnerability at the back was again exposed after the break when a persistent Johnston stole a stray ball and passed across to Gordon to place into the net six minutes after half time.

But Beckenham hit back immediately when Larsen picked up the ball in the box surrounded by defenders and maneuvered herself into a position to get a clear shot off, marking the turning point of the match.

Preiato got the first of a flurry of goals just after the hour mark when she won an aerial battle to convert Gale’s lofting cross.

Five minutes later Larsen worked her way to the touch line with a step over and a turn of pace where her cross was deflected into the goal by defender Cuthbertson.

Gale then set up the last goal of the game with a corner kick that Jobling towered above the Queens Park defence to head in making it three goals in just nine minutes.

More drama came in the 81st minute when Queens Park players were adamant they’d scored the equaliser in a goal line scramble, claiming the ball had crossed the line but the referee and linesmen thought otherwise.

Beckenham coach Jason Washington-King said that while he’s proud of the girls, he thought there were parts of the game where they didn’t make things easy for themselves.

“We’re sometime’s a bit slow with our starts and that’s what we were today,” he said.

“Queens Park came out ready to go and they played well. It was an outstanding effort I think, but we need to sort a few things out because defensively we didn’t do very well today.”
