Founding Clubs of Women's Soccer in WA

The Founding Clubs are the six clubs that competed in the first Girls Soccer league in Western Australia in 1972.

‘Sunday Times’ journalist Richard Bales formed the Australian Girls Soccer Association in July, 1971. Four months later, Oscar Mate becomes the first Chairman of the association, which is then renamed the Western Australian Girls Soccer Association.

Balga, Swan Athletic, Sorrento, South Perth United, Azzurri and Kwinana United contest the inaugural season of women’s football in the Perth metropolitan area, which kicks off on 7 July, 1972. Swan win the league without defeat and five points clear of runners-up Azzurri.
