Glory unchanged for Sydney clash

Friday, November 28, 2014

It has already been a season of unprecedented success for Perth Glory Women and there is no sign of an end to the record breaking campaign.

But coach Jamie Harnwell has little interest in the record books just yet.

After a week off, it is back to business for the Westfield W-League Premiers as they travel to WIN Stadium to take on Sydney FC on Sunday.

Despite having wrapped up top spot and claiming the first success of Glory’s seven-season W-League history, this match is far from a dead rubber with another milestone on the horizon.

Glory’s nine wins from 10 matches has earned them a 27-point haul equal to the record number of points in a single campaign achieved by Canberra last season.

A draw or victory against Sydney will confirm Glory’s league season as the best since the W-League was formed in 2008.

But the potential to post a record number of points is far from Harnwell’s mind.

“It’s not something I have tried to dwell on too much,” Harnwell said. “It would be a fantastic achievement again for this team if it happens.

“But if you start thinking about what might be, you forget to concentrate on the now, so that’s something to think about after the game.”

Harnwell’s side remains unchanged ahead of the Round 11 clash.

The match has particular resonance for Glory’s Samantha Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Alanna Kennedy, who will take on the club they helped win the 2012-13 W-League Grand Final.

But this will be no easy task against a Sydney outfit seeking a win to seal a place in the finals.

A victory over Glory will also take the Sky Blues a step closer to wrapping up a home semi-final.

“Sydney are a strong team and we had a real arm wrestle with them here, with a bit of Marianna Tabain magic, clinching us the 3 points,” Harnwell said of Glory’s 1-0 win on October 18. “They’ve got quality all over the park, and we can’t go over there complacent.

“They are fighting for a home semi final and we need to match that.”

Catch all the action from WIN Stadium on ABC TV Sunday at 3pm nationally. Coverage is delayed in Perth.
