‘Ed’ as Matthews was known, was one of the most consistent footballers in a club career that spanned five clubs, beginning with Girrawheen and ending with Morley Windmills and a state team career spanning 17 years, from the age of 17.

Ed was an out and out winger who intimidated any defender with a change of pace and a killer cross. She was selected in the All Star Australian team in 1998, at the conclusion of the National Senior Women’s Championships, in which she competed with the Western Australia state team, the last such tournament to be held in Australia. In 1999 at the National Championships held in Kuala Lumpur, she finished as leading goal scorer for the tournament.
