Melville City appoint Tony Carvajal as 2013 coach

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Melville City FC scored a major coup in securing Tony Carvajal as their Bankwest Women’s State Premier League coach for 2013.

Melville City FC women became League Champions without having to play their last game in the State League Division One against Subiaco.  Thanks to the organisation and application of 2012 coach Tony Castiello and Head Coach Jonny Gibson, the young, mostly teenage squad are in great shape moving into the Premier League next season.

The Reserve side secured their league trophy in the same week and in topping up the first team, proved all-round quality at the top level for the club.

The women have been consistently promoted through the junior leagues, open competition and now success in State League football 2012. A sheer weight of numbers and huge talent pool spurs them on.

Carvajal comes off a two-year break from women’s football and after a five-year span at one of the state’s oldest and most reputable clubs – East Fremantle. Carvajal moulded the squad into a ball playing, organised outfit, sweeping through his tenure with two Night Series crowns, and a top four finish in every year he was coach, plus the Top Four trophy.

A schoolteacher and Deputy Principal at Banksia Park Primary School, Carvajal is a highly qualified coach and occasional radio presenter. Carvajal has valuable skills the club needs to move forward. In his absence from top flight women’s football, he has been busy coaching state teams, organising school competitions such as the Glory Cups and teaching!

To add to the mouth-watering attraction of the Melville experience, the club supports a vast age range of players in elite programmes such as NTC, dedicated soccer schools such as John Curtin and state teams. The 15s and 13s Premier girls both won their leagues and both the Division One sides finished in the top two of their leagues. The Under 12 state schools coach Coach Gavin Brown teaches at John Curtin and some of the Melville girls are under his wing. There are six Melville players that made up the 15 player squad selected from the whole of WA for the Darwin Under 12 School Championships, it is great going for the biggest club in WA.

The Melville players in the U12 State School Sports WA team were:

Katie Grayson – Captain, Sofie Osborne – Vice Captain & 2012 State U13 representative, Sasha Edwards, Daniella Simatos, Aufa Moosa, Hannah Williams
