Melville City snatched top spot after a narrow 2-1 defeat of Queens Park in the Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division top-of-the-table clash at Coker Park on Sunday.

Goals to Lucy Jerram and Jamie Duncanson was enough to secure three points and send Melville to the top.

Melville coach Gabrielle Walker-Ortega was impressed with her side’s attacking display.

“I’m ecstatic with the way the girls played, I couldn’t be more proud of them,” she said.

“To always put pressure on is something we usually don’t do enough, but we did that perfectly today which won us the game.

“The backline and our goalkeeper is where our strength comes from, if your defence is strong then the rest of your team won’t be afraid to push up.”

The away side snatched the opening goal in the fifth minute as goalkeeper Loren Mahoney failed to clear a pass back leaving Jerram to score against an open net.

Melville were able to secure their second on 25 minutes. This time through Duncanson who did well to strike low towards the near post.

Queens Park came out firing after the break.

Sadie Lawrence gave Queens Park a glimmer of hope as she fired home from the edge of the box in the 64th minute.

With two minutes left of play Brooke Johnston came close to finding the equaliser but her headed effort was off target.

Queens Park coach Ben Anderton said that the two early goals were too much for his side to come back from.

“They got two quick goals against us which at the end of the day in the conditions and the way they played was hard for us to bring it back,” he said.

“We knew they were going to come out hard and press us strong, so we tried to play a bit more expansive football to open up the pitch but they did well to get two goals in the first 25 minutes.”
