Monday, May 09, 2016

Melville City held Football West National Training Centre to a 2-2 draw in round four of the Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Divsion at Winthrop Reserve on Sunday.

Report by Adrian Klein

NTC snatched two goals in the first 15 minutes, but Melville came from behind to salvage a draw.

Melville coach Gabrielle Walker-Ortega said that she was pleased with her side’s comeback.

“I’m happy with the way they played,” she said.

“We deserved to comeback from 2-0 down and I give my credit to my girls for taking a loss in the first half and coming back to give it their all.

“We were really struggling to get the ball into the final third and finish it, but we were playing every other position well.”

The first goal came seven minutes into the first half as a mistake from the Melville defence gifted NTC a free shot at goal which was converted through Rolsin Connelly’s second effort.

It looked like NTC were well in control of the game, netting a second goal nine minutes later as Melville goalkeeper Evie Gooch could only watch on as Llana Cook put it in the bottom left corner.

The hosts responded on 25 minutes when Jamie Duncanson struck the ball from outside the box past Dal Busco.

Melville were able to complete their comeback two minutes into the second half through Tia Stonehill, who beat Dal Busco at the near post.

Both sides continued to battle it out but the spoils were shared at the final whistle.

NTC coach Jessine Bonzas said that she couldn’t complain about her side’s efforts.

“I’m really happy with how the girls are and they’re getting better every week,” she said.

“We controlled the game in terms of possession and played a big attacking brand of football.”
