Gill primed to shoot down Jets

Friday, November 08, 2013

Westfield Matildas co-captain and Perth Glory striker Kate Gill expects nothing less than a win when the 2013/14 Westfield W-League kicks off tomorrow afternoon against Newcastle Jets.

The 28-year-old was the league’s top scorer last season and will headline the Glory attack against her former club at Wanderers Oval.

Gill bagged her first W-League hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last year, a 6-1 victory which remains the club’s biggest win.

“We have a good attacking presence up front with Christina (Julien) and also with Collette (McCallum), so hopefully we can put a few in the back of the net,” Gill said.

“It’s good to see some new faces amongst the group and I’m just excited to finally get it started.”

Coach Jamie Harnwell has added new international signings Chantel Jones, a goalkeeper from the United States, Danish defender Cecilie Sandvej and Canadian World Cup striker Christina Julien.

Gill says the team wants to start with a bang and improve on last season’s history-making first finals appearance.

“Time will tell on the weekend about how well it’s (pre-season) really gone, but by the looks of it everyone is ready and raring to go which is a good, positive sign,” she said.

“I’ve got fairly limited knowledge on their (Newcastle) squad. They’ve lost Emily Van Egmond to Western Sydney, so that’s a huge loss for them, but I’m sure there will be an abundance of great local talent shown on the weekend.”

Glory’s striking options will be further boosted by the signing of Katarina Jukic from Bankwest Women’s State Premier League club Beckenham Angels.

The 23-year-old former Glory player, who scored twice in 19 W-League appearances, is unavailable due to a groin injury but should be ready for selection in Round 3.

Kick-off against the Jets is 12pm Perth time.
