The Glory brings soccer to Girl Guides for first time in 100 years
On Monday evening, September 15, four international stars from the Perth Glory Women’s team ran a special training session for the Willetton Sunshine Guides under lights at the Willetton Reserve.
Included in the Glory line-up was one of the famous Kerr family, 21 year old National women’s soccer (known as the Matildas) player Sam Kerr – sister of former West Coast Eagle Daniel Kerr. W-League Champion player Caitlin Ford, formerly of Sydney FC, debuted as one of the youngest National players at the age of 16 at the World Cup in 2011. Alannah Kennedy and Glory keeper Mackenzie Arnold completed the star line-up on Monday night that dazzled and enticed the young Guides into becoming firm soccer converts.
Penny Tanner Hoath, Girl Guide Unit Helper and former National player herself, said “My daughter Rose Maree, 7, loves Girl Guides and plays soccer herself. At Guides, we’re all about building character and what’s better than in a team environment while you’re having fun. At our recent camp at Manjedal, our youngest member (6) surprised everyone by crate stacking 14 high while hanging in mid-air with a harness on!”
Always on the lookout for new and fun ways to keep girls outdoors and active, the leadership team of the Willetton Sunshine Guides invited the Perth Glory Women to come along and show the Girl Guides just how it’s done!
Twenty four girls aged between 6 and 10 dribbled, kicked, giggled and learnt their way through an hour playing the most popular sport in Australia and the world.
It was a first time experience for 98% of the Guides and a 100% new experience for Girl Guides in WA to bring soccer and Guides together.
Girl Guides Western Australia is currently celebrating 100 years of Girl Guiding. The values of which friendship, character and respect remain as strong as they did 100 years ago; the activities that we express them in have just changed a little!
