Beckenham Angels kept the pressure on the top two in the Bank West Women’s State League Premier Division after a 2-1 win against second placed Queens Park at Sutherlands Park on Sunday.

The Angels sit in third place, six points behind league leaders Northern Redbacks who had a comfortable 6-0 win over NTC.

Stephanie Cain opened the scoring mid-way through the first half, before Katarina Jukic added a second on the stroke of half time. Nicole Campbell halved the deficit with 20 minutes remaining, but the visitors could not find the equaliser.

Although she was not on the scoresheet, Angels’ Jamie Lee Gale was outstanding, and both goals came from the winger’s crosses.

“We had enough chances to win by a few more, but we failed to take our chances, but they defended well,” Gale said.

“We must keep going and continue to do what we’ve been doing all season, and we’ll see how we go, so it’s onwards and upwards for us now.”

Angels Coach Jason Washington-King said if they keep winning they can push for the title.

“Today’s game could have been over before half time, but they have a good keeper and she played well, but we kept going and got our rewards, and I think we deserved it,” he said.

“There is a long way to go but the girls are playing well, and we have to play all the teams at the top of the table again, so the players know if we can keep on winning, their destiny is in their own hands.”

The rain clouds were hovering at kick off and it was the home side who dominated early.

Cain fired over after good work from Marianna Tabain on 12 minutes, but they were ahead on 24 minutes.

Gale made space down the right and whipped in a great cross to Cain, whose shot squirmed under Queens Park keeper Maya Diederichsen and rolled into the net.

The Queens Park custodian then saved well to deny Roxy Dodd, but there was little she could do when the home side doubled their lead on the stroke of half time. Gale again was the provider.

It looked like the ball was going out but she raced forward and managed to get her cross in from the bye-line, and it was not cleared by the Queens Park defence.

Jukic produced a cheeky back heel to score from 4m and send the Angels in 2-0 at the break.

It was much of the same after the break with Beckenham piling forward, and Campbell had to be alert to clear Tabain’s shot off the line early.

Tabain was in the thick of the action again moments later. The Perth Glory Women midfielder’s long-range shot was only parried by Diederichsen, but the Queens Park custodian was alert to save the follow up shot from Cain.

Beckenham were peppering the Queens Park goal. Gale picked out Dodd, whose shot was saved low by Diederichsen on the hour, and then Cain fired into the side netting after being sent clear by Tabain.

Referee Peter Wagener awarded an in-direct free kick in the area, for a high foot, but Dodd’s shot was blocked on the line and cleared.

Against the run of play the visitors were back in the game on 70 minutes. Queens Park skipper Campbell won the ball in the middle of the park, and ran at the Beckenham defence, before unleashing a long-range low shot which flew into the bottom corner of the net.

It was game on and Brooke Johnston went close to the equaliser moments later, cutting in from the left, but Kate Burns was out quick to deny her.

Queens Park pressed late, and Stacey Learmont had their best effort with four minutes remaining, but her free kick drifted just wide of the target.
