Beckenham Angels coach Jason Washington-King said his side were beaten by an experienced Northern Redbacks who could go the season undefeated following last night’s 4-1 loss in the Bankwest Women’s Premier Division Night Series Final at Coker Park.

A sterling second half performance helped the Northern Redbacks run out 4-1 winners after a concerted spell of pressure from the tireless Angels.

After being down 2-0 Beckenham found their way back into the game just before half time when Jamie-Lee Gale sped past the Redbacks defence and finished with aplomb.

But their second half resurgence failed to change the score line as the experience of the Redbacks and a string of crucial saves by Tracy Wheeler Medal winner Kathleen Waycott settled the game and added the finishing touches to a 4-1 score line.

The final pitted up the 2013 Night Series winners Redbacks against the defending champions and Wasington-King believes the Night Series title could only be the start for the rival Redbacks.

“We were just beaten by a better team tonight,” Washington-King said.

“I think their experience proved to be crucial and they played better than us.

“I think it will be hard for anyone to beat them this year with the talent they have and I think they have a better team than the one who went undefeated in 2013.”

The Redbacks had started the game on the front foot and had seen a number of half chances turn to nothing but the opening goal proved to be worth the wait.

Former Perth Glory Women midfielder Elisa D’Ovidio, who was a constant menace for the Beckenham defence, weaved her way through a congested midfield and found Renee Leota who delicately curled an effort into the top corner.

Jessica Burton pounced on a loose corner to make it 2-0 before Gale scored just before half time.

Boyed by Gale’s goal Beckenham blitzed the Redbacks’ defence but found Waycott in superb form as she denied two gilt-edged chances from Stephanie Cain when it looked certain the winger would score.

Beckenham were made to rue those chances as the Redbacks took the game by the scruff of the neck in a 10 minute spell of concerted pressure.

Ellis Glanfield made amends for her missed penalty when she tapped in a loose ball after Kate Burns could only parry D’Ovidio’s far post header, before Demi Vance finished off the scoring from a well-taken penalty.

Beckenham almost claimed one back but Katarina Jukic’s effort was cleared off the line as the Redbacks saw the game out.

The win gives new coach Conrad McKelvie a perfect start and feels his side must remain hungry after beating title contenders Queens Park and the Angels.

“I’m really pleased with the result,” McKelvie said. “I thought it was a really good performance by the whole team.

“We were challenged today but the experience of Vids (D’Ovidio) and the girls got us through a really tough 15 minutes when they (Beckenham) were on top.”

With the new season about to get underway, McKelvie said there is no time for complacency.

“We don’t want to start thinking that we’ve got this in the bag because we’ve beaten everybody,” he said. “We’ve got to continue improving and make sure we don’t sit there thinking it will be easy for us.”
