Super six give Glory finals feeling

Six Australian internationals will complement the best of WA’s local talent in a Perth Glory Women squad focused on reaching the Westfield W-League finals this season.

Glory coach Jamie Harnwell has responded to the challenges of the 2013 campaign by working overtime in the off-season to secure the services of world-class talent, including the return to Perth of Sam Kerr, who played for Sydney last season.

She will be joined by fellow Matildas Caitlin Foord, Mackenzie Arnold and Alanna Kennedy as new signings for 2014, while Kate Gill and Collette McCallum are familiar international faces in the Glory squad.

Harnwell is thrilled to have a green and gold “super six” on board and expects the players will push to perform during the Westfield W-League season with the FIFA Women’s World Cup just around the corner.

“To have six Matildas’ players in the squad leading into a World Cup year is really going to benefit the team,” Harnwell said.

“All of them will be desperate to perform and book their flight to Canada for next year and Perth Glory will be the beneficiary of that.”

Former Western Sydney Wanderers defender Kennedy is aiming for a finals berth.

“Obviously I don’t want to speak too soon but I don’t think finals, and even winning the league, is out of our reach and hopefully we can put something together and do well this year,” she said.

Arnold, who played alongside Kennedy at the Wanderers last season, is ready for her second stint with Glory after playing under Harnwell’s guidance three years ago.

“I’ve never been in a final, at all, so I’m hoping to do that this season,” she said.

Canadian international defender Shelina Zadorsky will be Glory’s only import player this season with Harnwell opting to rejuvenate his squad with the Australian contingent.

With his collection of world-class signings, he is also confident his side has the potential to make the top four.

“It’s fantastic to bring in so many quality players and characters into the Perth Glory squad,” he said.

“Our aim is to get back into the top four and with the signings we have made, we have the potential to do that.”

Zadorsky is due to arrive in Perth next week, while Kerr and Foord who have been playing in the United States, will join their teammates in early September.

Perth Glory will kick-off their W-League season at their new home venue, Ashfield Sports Club, on Sunday, September 14, against Brisbane Roar.
