Ambitious young female goalkeepers are being offered an exciting opportunity to be trained by the Matildas most-capped goalkeeper Tracey Wheeler as well as former Perth Glory Women goalkeeper Kristy Teschinsky.
Beckenham Angels SC are offering high-level goalkeeper training on Thursday nights from 6pm until 7.30pm by Tracey Wheeler who played 49 times for Australia between 1989 and 2000 and was the inaugural goalkeeping coach for the Perth Glory Women’s team.
One of her most outstanding students is Beckenham Angels Premier Division goalkeeper Kristy Teschinsky. In 2011 and 2012, Kristy won the Football West award for the best female goalkeeper in the Premier Division and her success resulted in her selection in the Perth Glory Women’s squad in 2011/12.
“Kristy and I have got a lot out of the women’s game and want to give something back,” Wheeler said.
“As players we both found that specialist goalkeeper training for young women is a rare commodity. Developing the necessary agility and ability to read the game is hard to do on your own.”
There is a bonus for those attending the training sessions as there may be a chance to play regularly for the Beckenham Angels State League Premier Division reserves or Metropolitan Division 1 side. “Our regular reserves goalkeeper has had to withdraw for this season and we are still deciding on a keeper for the D1 side,” Wheeler said.
To complement its Premier Division first and reserves teams, Beckenham Angels has a team playing in the Metropolitan League Division 1. This is made up primarily of players between the ages of 15 and 22, with the aim of providing a pathway into the Premier League.
The Division 1 team is trained as part of the Premier League squad and its coach works closely with the club’s head coach, Jason Washington-King, who took the club to its first Premier Division championship (2012) and its first State League Cup (2013).
