Wanderers test up next

Thursday, December 12, 2013

Perth Glory Women will take confidence into Saturday’s Westfield W-League match against Western Sydney Wanderers at Marconi Stadium after registering their first home win of the season last weekend.

Rosie Sutton scored a morale-boosting 89th-minute winner against Adelaide United last Saturday, while the Wanderers were taking a break from competition due to a rescheduled fixture.

Glory’s clash with Wanderers will bring up a milestone for Perth midfielder Ella Mastrantonio, who is preparing for her 50th W-League match in a career which has included a one-season spell at Melbourne Victory.

Mastrantonio knows how difficult the challenge will be but says the team will be ready to take on their fellow finals contender.

“They are up there with Brisbane in terms of having one of the strongest squads in the league, stacked with Matildas and internationals,” she said.

“But we have the players that can do it and it’s going to be another important match for us.”

The 21-year-old rates last season’s history-making finals appearance as her career highlight and is hungry for more glory.

“I’ve really enjoyed it – you can’t ask for much more than playing for your home town and it is something that I’m very proud to be able to do,” Mastrantonio said.

“Playing with the likes of Marianna (Tabain), Shannon (May), and growing up alongside them has helped me create lifetime bonds through football.

“But at the end of the day it’s all about success as a team rather than personally and we will be out to make the most of what is a very short season.”

Youngster Jess Dillon is the only addition to Jamie Harnwell’s squad, which will fly out of Perth tomorrow morning.
